why does this matter to us?
For ALL the children just starting their education journey, they are the "why" of our advocacy efforts.
Experts, cognitive scientists, researchers and others learned long ago how children are best taught to read. This boy, who is now 18 years old, has graduated high school without the same choices and opportunities as other students because our education system tried to teach him to read with a flawed methodology. The vast majority of school districts still use those flawed methods of instruction. MOST OF US don't realize it is the flaws in our education system that continue to fail to teach the vast majority of children to read. Because we know better - we must do better.

Teachers Should Be Given the Right Tools to Teach Reading to our Children
We must demand of our colleges of education that they provide our teachers the proper instruction and education necessary to teach students to read. This includes an education that includes evidence-based structured literacy instruction rooted in the science of reading. If you want to learn more, please read my blog. We Are All More Alike Than We Are Different...
We believe that all of us are the same in that our hopes & dreams for our children include the desire that they achieve whatever they set their minds to. If our children are not taught to read, those hopes and dreams can be impossible for them to reach, despite our best efforts & intentions.
Let us come together - for the health & welfare of each of our communities. ALL of our children benefit from effective, evidence-based structured literacy instruction rooted in the science of reading.
